A Surf Lesson in Tamarindo
I’ve been living in Tamarindo, the paradise of surf, for four years now.
Tamarindo is on the North Pacific coast of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
But it’s not just any beach: in Tama, as we affectionately call it, you’ll find one of the most generous tides for beginner and intermediate surfers.
Its moderate, consistent waves throughout the year, combined with the shape of the beach, make it the perfect place to learn to surf in a safe and fun way.
My first surf lesson in Tamarindo
Believe it or not, in all my years here I had never stepped on a surfboard… until I met Bar and Bobby at Salty Smile Surf School.
That day I woke up early and excited.
I was a little scared, the same kind of nervousness you feel on a first date.
I put on my most comfortable swimsuit, filled up my water bottle, and walked over to Salty Smile, where Bobby was already waiting for me.
He picked out the board for the lesson, I slipped into a Salty rash guard, and we headed to the beach.

We walked to a quiet spot, with no rocks and few people around, shaded by some trees.
At first we were silent, until Bobby smiled and said: “don’t be so serious.”
We laughed, I admitted my nerves, and then we continued chatting lightly about the ocean and its conditions that day.
That’s when the class really began.
Warming up before hitting the waves
We did a short warm-up and some stretching.
Nothing complicated, but enough to prepare both body and mind.
Then Bobby showed me different ways to pop up on the board.
We practiced them over and over again on the sand, until we chose one and repeated it several more times.
Finally, it was time to get in the water.
Learning the language of the sea
Once in the ocean, every wave was an attempt-some failed, others successful. Bobby stayed with me the whole time, correcting me when I made mistakes and celebrating every little progress.

Surfing is hard, yes, but it’s also one of the most fun, liberating, and exciting experiences I’ve ever had.
During the lesson I improved a lot: from needing constant help to almost standing up on my own. That feeling was incredible.
After 120 minutes in the water, I was exhausted but absolutely happy.
It felt like I was finally making up for all those years when fear, lack of time, or excuses kept me from giving myself the chance to try.
More than just a sport
That day I understood that surfing isn’t just a sport: it’s speaking the language of the sea.
Now, when I walk along the beach, I know the waves are not just part of the horizon.
They’re an invitation-to learn, to fall and tumble, to flow with the water, and to get back up again and again.
